At South OC Socials, our mission is to empower the next generation of storytellers by providing teens and young adults with real-world writing and editing opportunities in journalism, media, and design. We’re dedicated to developing a credible, youth-driven platform that covers the stories, people, and events that matter most to our Orange County community, because we believe local voices deserve to be heard.
MEET THE TEAM
Our Story
In the summer of 2024, I decided I wanted to become a journalist. I was excited to write, to read, and to be part of telling stories that mattered. As I began looking for local news to engage with, I noticed something missing. Local journalism was declining, and even more noticeably, there was almost no local news created for teenagers, by teenagers, written in a way they could truly connect with. As a result, many of the stories and events teens care about were often overlooked or left untold.
South OC Socials was created to fill that gap. The newspaper gives teenagers the opportunity to write about their community, earn volunteer hours, and gain meaningful experience for college applications. It allows young writers to focus on the issues, events, and ideas they genuinely care about, and to share them with readers their own age.
Above all, South OC Socials is a space for young voices to be heard and for teens to see themselves represented in local news. By joining our team, you can help support our mission of expanding literacy and journalistic opportunities for young people across Orange County.
